ESC – Electronic Stability Control is a break through technology. ESC systems exist under many trade names, including Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and Vehicle Stability Enhancement (VSE). You can learn all about it at The Official Website for the ESC – Electronic Stability Control Website; http://www.esceducation.org/index.shtml . The first revolutionary production car that had this system was the Porsche 959, of course at the time it cost $180,000 and that was in 1985 and only 283 or so were built. So the people on the waiting list who finally got the cars were able to make $100,000 quite easily by selling them to collectors. Some sold as high as $500,000 and a few that made it to Japan sold for $1,000,000.00 but now we may see more of the regular production cars with these systems very soon. Many luxury cars offer these stability controls and sensors now, but few understand what they are. Most European imports have it as a option and also many Domestic Models, here are some of the manufacturers who are offering these systems and the names they have called their proprietary systems: Audi: Electronic Stability Program (ESP), BMW: Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), DaimlerChrysler: Electronic Stability Program (ESP). Ford Motor Company: Advance Trac. General Motors: Active Handling System (Corvette), Precision Control System (Oldsmobile), Stabilitrak (Pontiac, Buick, Cadillac), Jaguar: Dynamic Stability Control (DSM), Lexus: Vehicle Skid Control (VSC), Porsche: Porsche Stability Management (PSM), Volkswagen: Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Volvo: Dynamic Stability Traction Control (DTSC). We have been tracking this story for about 5 years since we have been seeing these pop up on more and more sports cars and now SUVs for safety issue and we noticed it hit the major media in October when it hit Money Magazine and CNN; http://money.cnn.com/2003/09/25/pf/autos/what_is_esc/ . In June we saw that the EU’s standards for ESC was getting some talk amongst those in the safety industry on both sides of the pond and consumer groups are pushing for it as well as well connected “K-Street” lobbyists whose clients sell such devices. Also take a look at the Accident Re-Construction Website; http://www.accidentreconstruction.com/news/jun03/060303b.asp and in July; http://www.accidentreconstruction.com/news/jul03/072903a.asp . We saw that the NHTSA has been working on this for a while: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/Rollover/newestsub_esc.htm . It made the Congressional hearing information gathering for the ten-fifteen passenger domestic vans for an idea to improve safety. We had recently discussed this. http://www.parthe.net/_oilchangeguys/0000005c.htm . We believe that this is a major break through for Fleet Vehicles also: http://www.wabco-auto.com/intl/en/esc.php . We are seeing that many of our fleet customers are ordering new vans and equipment with the ESC type devices to save on insurance. Insurance for fleets have increased 30% in the last 3 years, due to excessive lawsuits and lawyers targeting the transportation industry. There have been many large class action lawsuits over tire inflation and somewhat incited the media and therefore the people and this has prompted lawmakers to use this issue to get votes and campaign help from the consumer groups: http://www.parthe.net/_oilchangeguys/0000006c.htm and http://www.parthe.net/_oilchangeguys/0000007c.htm and http://www.parthe.net/_oilchangeguys/0000006d.htm . We will be seeing much more of these devises in the future to save lives. Here are some of the things we will see in the future in transportation. New electronics: http://www.parthe.net/_cwg1003/0000005e.htm and http://www.parthe.net/_cwg0803/00000033.htm and http://www.parthe.net/_cwg0503/00000076.htm and http://www.parthe.net/_cwg1003/0000007c.htm . The American automobile, SUV, Bus and Truck are changing fast along with the electronic sensor technology, Hybrid propulsion technology, Nano-Technology for materials and Aerodynamic advances. This will most definitely affect the way we wash, schedule routes and service the desires of our customers. We should feel fortunate to learn that these technologies although are not really that new, will be coming down in price and finding their way into our cars and keeping us safer on the highway. We are still seeing way too many deaths on the highways of our country, highway deaths are still amongst the largest causes of deaths in our country. The number of highway deaths each year in this country make the Flu, SARS, Mad Cow, Iraq, Afghanistan, Twin Towers look like a picnic in comparison. Surely we need to pay attention to all these other issues as well to prevent deaths. But it is also good to see that we are finding cures for cancer in Bio-Tech and working on methods to make are cars better and safer for less money so that all American’s can afford a little more safety to live out their lives and pursue their American Dream. Will ESC become common place? Yes or a hybrid of this technology will become the standard on all cars, without raising the price too much due to economies of scale and micro-electronic sensors. It really is not that far a step from the already very popular ABS Anti-lock breaking system. That’s all for now, after you read all these links you should have a great understanding on what ESC is and why we need it as much as safety belts; http://www.parthe.net/_cwg1202/0000006f.htm and http://www.parthe.net/_cwg1003/0000000e.htm and if you find any interesting information on automotive safety, please give me a shout; Lance@carwashguys.com
